New Trier Trevians and Barrington Fillies Win the Top Spots in the Metro League in 2025

The Metro Girls Playoffs and Championships took place February 14-16 at Lake Forest Academy. New Trier won the top spot in the Scholastic Cup while Barrington won the Founders Cup!

The semi-finals started on Friday when Barrington faced off against Grizzlies in the first Founders Cup game and Fenwick and New Trier competed in game one of the Scholastic Cup. Barrington beat the Grizzlies by a score of 5-0, but the real story of this game was the show put on by Grizzlies goalie, Cecilia Wielenberg who had 67 saves in the game! In addition, Nicole Gorbatenko scored a hat trick for the Fillies. The Fenwick-New Trier game was very exciting and close and went into OT when they game ended with a score of 1-1. The Trevians were able to slide one past the Fenwick goalie to win the game. 

On Saturday, the semi-finals continued with Lake Forest Academy taking on Chicago Central in the Founders Cup and Glenbrook facing off against Naper Valley in the Scholastic Cup. Chicago Central beat LFA 5-3 and with Central’s Carla McSweeney scoring all five goals. The Naper Valley-Glenbrook game was very evenly matched with back-and-forth play the entire game. In the end, Glenbrook defeated Naper Valley, 2-1.

The Championship series featured two very exciting games to earn the two spots in the league. In the Founders Cup game, Barrington beat Chicago Central by a s core of 8-2. Central’s McSweeney scored both goals, while Barrington’s Rachel Gorbatenko scored a hat trick. In the Scholastic Championship game New Trier and Glenbrook went back and forth with no score in the game until the last five minutes, when New Trier’s Ava Schuster scored the game’s only goal to seal the victory.

Huge congrats to all the teams that competed this weekend. The Metro League would also like to give a big shout out to all those at Lake Forest Academy – including the LFA students that helped keep score, run the clock and play music – that made the Play-offs games such a fun experience.
